A steam train in the Swiss Alps near Interlaken

Whilst travelling through the outdoors, you can enjoy the indoor comforts of the Jungfrau Railway. The nostalgic Ballenberg Steam-Powered Cogwheel Railway only runs on select dates throughout the year, the next being Sunday 7 November. The traditional steam-powered engine, built in 1913 traverses the Bernese Oberland landscape, taking passengers between Interlaken East Station and Meiringen.

A number of cruise options depart from Interlaken East throughout the year. With options to sit indoors and out, it’s a great choice for those unpredictable autumnal days. Cruises pass the likes of Giessbach Falls, Oberried, Iseltwald, Niederried, Ringgenberg, Bönigen. At just over an hour and a quarter, this is another trip of nostalgia – this time on a steamboat. Enjoy unspoilt nature on the turquoise waters of Lake Brienz, soak in the breathtaking views of towering mountains, lush forests, crystal-clear streams and waterfalls. There’s so much outstanding natural scenery to enjoy at your leisure on the Lake Brienz cruises.
